BURDASTYLE 07/2019 TUNIC

Not long after Burdastyle 101 Tee was finished, I turned the page of the magazine and there was this Burdastyle 106 Tunic resplendent in a turquoise cotton print uncannily similar to a turquoise cotton/silk print I already had in my stash:

So what else is a girl to do?!

My fabric is circa 2015 from The Fabric Store, and it is a beautiful quality cotton/silk. Very lightweight but not sheer, and a dream to cut and sew. Buy this stuff if you ever see it! It makes amazing lightweight summer dresses too.

The pattern is very much a classic tunic shape – raglan armhole, gathered neckline with tie and split, and gathered cuffs with ties. You can see the ease well in the photo below. I don’t think I really suit this oversize shape, but I can definitely see myself wearing it as a beach cover up.

There is one thing I would change if I was to make this again. The sleeve is hemmed to form a casing that the tie runs through, and it is a little annoying to wear as you cannot push the sleeves up, something you often want to do with a long full sleeve. I have tried doing the dishes in this top!! Practical me would settle for some elastic in the casing, and maybe a fake tie instead.

Other than that, this top comes together sooo quickly (aided by the dream fabric), and I’m sure I’ll appreciate it’s comfort come summer!

  1. That’s really pretty. earlier this year I made a similar top from Burda mag. and while I like it the oversize nature of it just doesn’t feel like me – so I know what you mean.

  2. I’m a big fan of Burda but their sizes are quite big. Perhaps not the most flattering garment I’ve seen you make/wear, though pretty fabric. Which size did you choose?

    1. I chose size 38 which is my bust size exactly. I would say the size is fine as it is designed to be oversize. The sleeves are quite long (but I was expecting them to be bracelet length) and my arms are quite long.
